The AI Companion Economy in Numbers: 416M Monthly Visits, 610 Tools, One Power Law
When we published our full AI tool traffic report, one finding surprised people more than any other: AI companion apps are the second-largest traffic category in AI, behind only the general-purpose LLMs. That deserves a closer look on its own. Across the 16,931 tools in the BotAI directory, 610 are tagged as companions โ and together they account for 416 million monthly visits, 13.9% of all traffic we track. Here is what the category actually looks like inside.
Bigger per tool than anything else in AI
The raw category totals understate it. Attributing each tool to its primary category, 203 tools call companion their home โ and they pull 345 million monthly visits between them. That is 1.70 million visits per tool on average, against a site-wide average of 301k across all 9,959 tracked tools. Companion apps out-earn the average AI tool by a factor of 5.6 โ a per-product concentration only the mega-category incumbents (the 96-tool LLM bucket and its ChatGPT-class leaders) beat by a wide margin.
The top three take half the category
Like the wider AI market, the companion category is a power law โ but a steeper one. SpicyChat AI leads with 73.9M monthly visits, PolyBuzz follows at 66.0M, and Candy.ai at 63.1M. Those three alone account for 203M visits โ 48.8% of everything the category generates. The top ten (adding Emochi, CrushOn.AI, Venice.ai, GPTGirlfriend, Lovescape AI, PixAI, and Juicychat) extend the share past 70%.
- SpicyChat AI โ 73.9M visits/mo
- PolyBuzz โ 66.0M
- Candy.ai โ 63.1M
- Emochi โ 25.5M ยท CrushOn.AI โ 22.4M ยท Venice.ai โ 15.3M
Pricing: the freest category in AI
Companion products monetize differently from the rest of the directory. Site-wide, 36.6% of tools are fully paid and 16.8% are genuinely free. Inside the companion category, paid drops to 18.4% while free rises to 26.9% and freemium to 54.8%. In other words, 81.7% of companion tools let you start a conversation without paying anything โ against 62.7% for AI tools overall. The pattern is classic engagement-first economics: the product IS the free tier, and conversion happens after a habit forms. It is the same playbook that mobile games perfected, applied to relationships.
The long tail is crowded and quiet
Below the top ten sit another 600 tagged companion tools, most with modest traffic. The category is easy to enter โ a character wrapper over an LLM API ships in a weekend โ and the count shows it: 610 tagged tools compete for attention here. But the concentration numbers say the payoff structure is tournament-style. If you are building here, the question is not whether companions have demand โ 416M monthly visits answers that โ but whether you can be top-3 in a niche the current leaders do not own.
Methodology
Traffic figures are the public monthly-visit estimates embedded in toolify.ai listings, indexed for the 9,959 BotAI tools where they are available; treat them as directional estimates, not audited analytics. Category membership uses each tool's full tag set (610 tools) while category ranking attributes each tool to its primary category (203). Pricing labels are as listed by the source.
