Where AI Tool Traffic Actually Goes: 2.97 Billion Visits, 9,739 Tools
Most 'state of AI tools' posts rank the same twenty logos. We wanted the whole distribution. Across the 15,928 tools listed on BotAI, 9,739 carry public monthly-visit estimates โ together they account for 2.97 billion visits per month. That is a large enough sample to answer the question every builder actually asks: how much attention is left after the giants, and which categories is it in?
The headline: the top 100 tools take 65.6% of all traffic
Concentration is extreme but not winner-take-all. The single most-visited tool, DeepSeek, holds 11.7% of all indexed traffic. The top 10 hold 31.7%. Extend to the top 100 and you reach 65.6% โ which means the remaining 9,639 tools collectively still command 34.4% of 2.97 billion visits: roughly a billion monthly visits living in the long tail.
- DeepSeek โ 346M visits/mo (11.7% of all indexed traffic)
- Google AI Studio โ 117M (15.6% cumulative)
- Magnific โ 90M (18.6% cumulative)
- SpicyChat AI โ 74M (21.1% cumulative)
- PolyBuzz โ 66M (23.3% cumulative)
The surprise: AI companions are the #2 traffic category
Ranked by combined traffic, the category order is not what launch-day hype suggests. General-purpose LLMs lead with 381M monthly visits (12.8%) across just 96 tools. Right behind them: AI companion apps, with 345M visits (11.6%) across 203 tools โ three of the global top ten (SpicyChat, PolyBuzz, Candy.ai) are companions. Image generation (161M), agents (157M across a sprawling 395 tools), and productivity (143M across 748) round out the top five.
The strategic read: productivity and agent tooling are the most fragmented categories โ hundreds of tools splitting attention โ while the companion and image categories concentrate rewards faster. If you are picking a category to build in, fragmentation means the traffic floor is low but so is the ceiling; concentrated categories pay out power-law style to whoever wins the top slots.
Pricing follows the traffic: freemium is the default
Across all 15,928 tools, 45.9% are freemium, 36.5% fully paid, 16.8% genuinely free, and 0.7% open-source. The freemium dominance tracks the traffic story: the tools competing for long-tail attention almost always need a free entry point, because the alternative โ asking for a credit card before any value โ is a tax the tail cannot afford.
What this means if you are building
- A billion monthly visits sit outside the top 100 โ the long tail is real traffic, not rounding error.
- Fragmented categories (agents: 395 tools, productivity: 748) reward distribution and SEO more than raw product quality at the margin.
- Companion and image categories concentrate fast โ if you enter, plan to be top-3 in your niche or not at all.
Methodology
Traffic figures are the public monthly-visit estimates embedded in toolify.ai listings, indexed for the 9,739 BotAI tools where they are available; treat them as directional estimates, not audited analytics. Category shares attribute each tool to its primary category. Counts reflect the BotAI database as of August 18, 2026.
